2019 Partner country:

United Kingdom

The UK is one of the world’s greatest cultural nations. The UK is not just famous for its museums, galleries, heritage and monuments, but also for the dynamism and diversity of its commercial creative industries. Over the last two decades, the UK’s creative sector has contributed over £100 billion a year to the economy, providing 3 million jobs and growing at twice the rate of the rest of the economy. The UK has a unique combination of strengths in media, culture and education, which enables it to create and transmit trends and influence. Trend forecasters identify the UK as a key market; if trends do not take root in the UK, they are unlikely to be considered truly global. From fashion to film, architecture to advertising, UK creatives have a well-earned reputation for challenging conventions and embracing the new with professionalism and flair.

This year, the UK Department for International Trade launched the Great British Design campaign in conjunction with the UK’s participation as Partner Country at the Business of Design Week (BODW). Sir John Sorrell CBE will lead the largest ever delegation of British designers to visit Hong Kong and the wider Greater Bay Area. Throughout the year-long campaign, a top-calibre programme of citywide events, discussions and interactive experiences will investigate how design and design thinking will affect how we live, work, play and learn in the future.

With a design inspired by the UK’s physical geography, evoking waves and the historic role of its canals and the seas to connect with and to trade with the world, the UK Pavilion at DesignInspire will showcase what happens when creativity meets science and technology to design our future and create tomorrow.
